Beginners Drum with John Bowker

He brings his great sense of humor and deep understanding of the drum to facilitating large groups in exploring wonderful rhythms and chants from the tribal cultures of planet earth. See Tribal Spirit Drumming.
Rainforest chants
Drawing on a rich resource of music and song from central African rainforests John leads the group into a deep and sacred space. Learn some extraordinary harmonies weaved with teachings of the earth. Johns friendly teaching style encourages everyone to participate, creating a safe space for all, even those of us who feel we 'cant sing'.
Men's song lodge
A safe space for men to explore how to celebrate and support each other. Working with chant and wisdom from tribal traditions.
Chrys Blanchard
Chrys is a freelance, composer, choir leader and percussionist, whose professional work calls upon the great diversity of skills she has acquired after more than 30 years in the performing arts. She creates and directs projects, training and workshops for education, theatre and community. Chrys has a passion for sound and for rhythm with a particular interest in sound healing, and the effects of sound and music in our lives This makes for some interesting voice work, focusing on listening to the quality of the sound we make as a group, and playing with texture and style. Quirky rhythms and clapping patterns from many cultural sources add to the richness of the experience. Chrys also creates Gong baths and Soundscapes where you can immerse yourself in deep sound relaxation. Chrys will be offering "Find your voice sessions" at Unicorn camp in August 2011.
Gong bath with Chrys
Allow yourself to be bathed in the sound of a selection of gongs. Played by Chrys, the sounds can be gentle, powerful, vibrant, deeply meditative and healing.
Taize
This is a night of meditative singing. We will sing simple, prayerful phrases creating a weave of sound that many people find opens them to a deep awareness of spirit. Once the songs are learned we sing as a group with no leader. Some like to bring a candle to light the space and hold an intention.
Rhythms in Flux; West African drumming with John Sutton
Dunduns Galore
We'll have lots of dunduns. Everyone, even the dundun-terrified, can play dundun here and love it! If not on a dundun, you can hold the beauty of very accessible, steadily repeating parts or you can twist and turn through a lively stream of shifting djembe patterns and breaks. Sticking to just one or two full rhythms through the week we'll build up the relatively intricate parts bit by bit, so come more than once if you can. We'll hope for a chance to do a small performance late in the week. Simple notation will be available. Open to all but generally best for people with some experience.
Biographical note
English born, I was doing professional astrology in 1993 when one of my sons put me onto West African drumming. That led, nine years later, to nine more years of djembe & dundun music working with Norfolk children and adults. Meanwhile I enjoyed local Tribalspirit-ish drumming led by fellow band-member Chicken Steve, and he eventually lured me to Earthsong. Astrology suggests Ireland is a grand place for me to find beauty, music, song, companionship and love; seems true enough so I've moved!
